About This Project

This website contains a collection of stories and other texts spoken in the Guébie language. Guébie is an Eastern Kru language spoken in Côte d'Ivoire. These texts were spoken by Guébie speakers from the village of Gnagbodougnoa in the prefecture of Gagnoa. Through the texts on this site, you can learn more about Guébie language, culture, and traditional stories.

The Data

This page was built for instructional purposes, specifically for the Ling 170/270 course on the structure of the Guébie language taught by Hannah Sande at UC Berkeley in Spring 2026. Future iterations of this site will serve as a resource for Guébie people as well as researchers who are interested in learning more about the language. There is no Guébie orthography, so the texts here are transcribed phonetically in the IPA, glossed using the Leipzig glossing conventions, and translated into English and French.

Contributors

  • Hannah Sande is an Associate Professor of Linguistics at UC Berkeley and has been working with Guébie speakers to document and describe the language since 2013. She has worked with Guébie speakers in Côte d'Ivoire, the US, and Canada, and has led several collaborative research trips in the Guébie community. She has been involved in the data collection, transcription, translation, glossing, and analysis represented on this site.

  • Marcus Ewert is a software engineer who visited the Guébie community of Gnagbodougnoa in 2016 and developed the technical aspects of this site.

  • Katherine Russell is a PhD student at UC Berkeley who has spent numerous summers in the Guébie community of Gnagbodougnoa carrying out documentary and descriptive work on the language. She has contributed to the transcription adn glossing of several of the texts in this collection.

  • Madeleine Oakley is an Assitant Professor at UT Arlington who visited the Guébie community as part of a collaborative documentary fieldtrip in Summer 2019. She continues to describe and analyze aspects of the language, and contributed to the transcription of several of the texts in this collection.
